Eme Awa



Eme Awa is the bandleader of Union Street and lead singer of Chopteeth. Chopteeth is a 14-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of the Chopteeth sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria.

Afrobeat is a spicy stew of Yoruba tribal music and West African pop. Chopteeth then mixes in classic Ghanaian funk, Senegalese rumba, Jamaican ska, and stirs it with choice selections from the James Brown catalog for an intoxicating infusion of righteous grooves. The massive result is a swirl of energetic melodies and call-and-response choruses, driven by interlocking drums and percussion, punctuated by a dynamic six-piece horn section. Funky organ and melodic guitars lay down a sensuous groove.

Chopteeth is based in Washington, DC and was recently honored with two Wammie Award nominations by their peers in the Washington Area Music Association. The nominations, for Best New Artist and Best World Music Group, led to a performance at the Wammies Awards Show in February 2005 at the new Strathmore Music Center in Bethesda, MD.

Eme's live performance ability has made him more than worthy of sharing the stage with national artists such as Jeffrey Osborne, Nester Torres, Angela Bofill, and Najee, to name a few.

Eme is the son of the late Professor Eme Awa, who was chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC).

King Onyeama of Eke

The King of Agbaja, Onyeama n’Eke was the greatest king in northern Igboland. He was probably the greatest Igbo king in living memory. From his palace in Eke, Onyeama reigned over the entire Agbaja, from Oji River though Udi and Ezeagu to the present-day political capital of Igboland, Enugu, and even Nkanu and Ogui communities. Onyeama was born circa 1870s, the youngest of the ten children of Özö Omulu Onwusi, a polygamous titled man of means, and an only son of his mother – Chinazungwa Ijeonyeabo of nearby Ebe community. Brought up by his half-brother, Amadiezeoha Nwankwo-Onwusi, Onyeama worked hard and made his mark in business. He traveled to famous Aro-controlled trading centers including Abiriba, Arochukwu, Arondizuogu, Bende, Oguta, Uburu, etc. When British rule reached Eke in 1908, Onyeama was rich enough to buy his way into the Ozo title society and to marry a local beauty, Afia Nwirediagu, and later Gwachi Ebue. Donatus Ibeakwadalam Nwoga

The late Donatus Nwoga was a Professor of African Literature and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Donatus was the Secretary of the Planning and Management Committee of the former Eastern Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (1970); member of the Board of the former East-Central State Broadcasting Corporation (1974-76); member of the former East-Central State Library Board (1975-76); and former member of Imo State Library Board (1977-79).
