Dr Ike Anya is currently Consultant in Public Health Medicine at the Inner North West London PCTs (NHS Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea) and honorary lecturer in public health at Imperial College. He leads on health protection and emergency planning, safeguarding children and support to clinical commissioning groups.
Qualified at the University of Nigeria in 1995 and holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RCP UK 2002), MSc in Tropical Medicine and International Health with distinction (2002) and MSc in Public Health (2004) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Specialist training in public health medicine included rotations at Bristol Primary Care Trust, the Health Protection Agency and University College London. Admitted to the Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health (UK) in April 2009.
Ike has taught at the London School of Hygiene, Imperial College, University College London, the University of the West of England and Bristol University. His research interests are in ethics, infectious disease, migration and international health.
Currently a Lead Partner for the General Medical Council, chairing certification and quality panels. He sits on the Black and Ethnic Minority Health Section and Epidemiology and Public Health Section Councils at the Royal Society of Medicine once serving as Secretary.
Past positions include medical officer posts at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, General Hospital Gwarzo and National Hospital Abuja; Board member at the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (2006-10) Vice-Chair of the Trainee Members Committee of the Faculty of Public Health UK, member of the British Medical Association Committee for Public Health Medicine; Board Member of Knightstone Housing Association and acting joint director of public health Hammersmith and Fulham.
Currently member of the Advisory Committee for Medecins Du Monde’s Project: London, and co-founder of the Nigerian Public Health Network, co-organizing the 2008 Partnership for Health Conference. Co-edits the Nigeria Health Watch Blog. One of 100 TED Global Fellows at the TED Africa Conference in 2007, Ike was a co-organizer of this weekend's TEDxEuston.
Founding Secretary of the Abuja Literary Society, he is co-editor of the Weaverbird Collection of New Nigerian Fiction and a contributing editor at Farafina, a literary magazine. His poetry, essays and interviews with writers have been published in Nigeria, the UK and the US.
