Ndi-Igbo in 2013


2013 has been an exciting year for Igbos around the world. Here are a few events that caught our attention.

Chinedu Echeruo sold his mobile and web mapping application, Hopstop to Apple for a lot of money.

Beyoncé sampled Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's call to feminism from TedXEuston 2012 on her new track ***Flawless.

Christine Ijeoma Ohuruogu claimed her second World Title in the 400 metres at the 2013 Athletics World Championships.

Leo Stan Ekeh, chairman of Nigeria’s Zinox Group, was appointed a global partner advisor by software giant Microsoft. Ekeh is the only African among Microsoft Advisors.

Rita Dominic and Mildred Okwo’s  film ‘The Meeting’ garnered rave reviews from film critics all across Nigeria.

The art of Ben Enwonwu (1917 – 1994) took center stage at Bonhams' sale of Modern and Contemporary African Art at Bonhams New Bond Street, May 22, with a new world record for the artist at £361,250.

Adaora Udoji became a 2013 Pipeline Fund Fellow, an angel investing bootcamp for women. 
Melvin Mezue, a D Phil candidate, topped a list of Britain’s highest achieving black or mixed heritage undergraduates and postgraduates.

Chiwetel Ejiofor became  a Name to Remember especially for his role in the film “12 Years a Slave,” for which he has collected top actor awards from several critics groups and nominations from SAG and the Golden Globes.

Professor Nwando Achebe, daughter of late Nigeria’s literary giant Chinua Achebe, was awarded the Third Book Prize, for her work “The Female King of Colonial Nigeria”.

Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo was named the new ambassador to the Dominican Republic for the Vatican.

Chika Unigwe won the 2013 Sylt Foundation African Writer’s Residency Award.

The Turner Prize-winning artist Chris Ofili became a new Tate Gallery member.

Okwui Enwezor was named the director of the 2015 Venice Biennale, the first African-born curator in the exhibition's 100-year history.

British actor Idris Elba has been announced to star in the adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala‘s bestselling book “Beasts of No Nation”.

Jason Njoku, Loy Okezie and Emeka Okoye were listed among Africa's Top 20 Technology Influencers.

Ijeoma Uchegbu, a Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience, at UCL School of Pharmacy, won the Pharmaceutical Scientist of the Year Award from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Chinasa Ogbuagu was cast in AMC’s drama pilot ‘Line of Sight’.

The Yara Prize 2013 was awarded to Mr. Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, for his work with African farmers and for the continent’s green revolution.

Tinnie Tempah’s album, Demonstration, was released in 2013 It entered the UK Albums Chart at number three.

Kanayo F. Nwanze was appointed by acclamation as President of The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for a second four-year term.

Nigerian designer, Amaka Osakwe clothed Michelle Obama for her African tour in 2013.

ArcSight Co-Founder Hugh Njemanze joined AlienVault as Senior Industry Advisor.

Flavour won Video of the Year at the 2013 Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA).

Chioma Okereke beat more than 1,800 others to be named runner-up in a prestigious inaugural short story competition - Costa Short Story Award.

The New York Times and other major US publications continued to acclaim Uzoamaka Maduka , Founder and editor in chief of The American Reader.

Chinelo Okparanta's book, Happiness, Like Water received glowing reviews in the New Yorker, NY Times and many more.

P-Square’s single ‘Personally’ was nominated for the "Best International Performance" award at the 2013 Soul Train Music Awards.

Kelechi Iheanacho was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player at the recent under-17 World Cup.

Ogo Offodile hit the headlines as Solange Knowles' new stylist

Kelvin Okafor came to the world’s attention with his amazing pencil drawings.

Sheffield Hallam University PhD student Chinwe Ozoegwu developed a robot arm modelled on an elephant's trunk to help people with restricted mobility carry out everyday tasks, such as helping them to feed themselves.

UNN professor, Francisca Okeke bagged a prize of $100,000 as one of the winners of the 2013 L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards in Physical Sciences.

Mr Emeka Mba was appointed the new Director General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC)

Kelechi Osemele and James Ihedigbo won the NFL Super Bowl (XLVII) with the Baltimore Ravens.

Amara Okereke (one to watch) got rave reviews for her part as Maria in NYMT's production of West Side Story at the Victoria Warehouse, Manchester.

Obi Asika joined African Media & Productions Network (AMPN) West Africa as Co-Founder. AMPN is an international TV production and media company which sells, and locally produces, international successful TV formats.
